What doctors like to do on their time off and how scheduling software can help with life balance

Putting in an average of 51.4 hours each week, doctors don’t have a lot of time to rest; this is especially true for clinicians working on irregular schedules. When physicians do get away from work, their time off is often quite short, so they have to be great at managing their personal time. Effective doctor scheduling software helps healthcare providers optimize their schedules and gain control over them.

Most Popular Hobbies and Activities among Physicians

While they don’t get much time to indulge, physicians enjoy a wide variety of hobbies to relax and rejuvenate their minds and bodies.

Running/jogging

Staying fit is important, of course, as doctors need as much exercise as do their patients.

In a survey by the AMA, about 50% of respondents younger than 40 said they run or jog. Doctors ages 40 to 59 said they run/jog, but also enjoy bicycling, camping, or hiking. About half of physicians over 60 said they walked to stay in shape.

Other sportsDoctors get their heart rates up at the golf course, tennis court, or ski slope. Aerobics and cardio workouts are also popular among physicians. Many providers said they enjoyed fishing.

Reading

Reading is wildly popular among doctors. In the AMA survey, more than half of physicians under the age of 40 said they read regularly, and 58% of respondents aged 40 to 59 were avid readers. Not surprisingly, 64% of physicians over the age of 60 said they regularly pick up a book.

Gourmet cooking

Gourmet cooking focuses on using high-quality, fresh ingredients and expert techniques to create exquisitely delicious cuisine. Whether they are creating a great meal for their families or putting together the perfect sandwich for their meal break, many doctors are turning to gourmet cooking as a hobby. In fact, almost half of all physicians in the AMA survey – regardless of their age, expressed an interest in gourmet cooking.

Other hobbies

Gardening, DIY decorating, home improvements, and playing musical instruments made the list of favorite pastimes.

Technology

Doctors have been quick to adopt new technologies, and for good reason – advances in medical technology have helped physicians provide faster and more accurate diagnoses using less invasive procedures, create personalized treatments, and provide this care more efficiently.

Technology has also completely revolutionized shift scheduling. Until the 1980s, physician scheduling was done with pencil and paper; this approach was tedious for both human resources and doctors, and it left little opportunity to give providers the time they needed to rest.

Today’s doctor scheduling software helps doctors make the most of their time off, but still gives hospitals and clinics the coverage they need to operate smoothly – even emergency medicine scheduling is a snap! The best physician scheduling software, such as ByteBloc, offers advanced features that help doctors manage their shifts and create more time for their hobbies.
